Along with submitting artwork, each student is asked to provide an artist’s statement concerning their inspiration for the piece they created or for their motivation in painting. Kathryn Mendoza from Danforth Middle School says, “Art is a way to express myself without words. Art’s a way for me to become myself and not who everyone wants me to be.” While Arnold Watson, aged six from Scudder states, “Painting is fun! I like to eat hamburgers, so I painted a hamburger.” Among the artwork featured is that from Rebeca Hernandez’s winning entry for the VFW Poster Contest for the July 4 Rodeo. It is the first time a high school student has won this contest.
